Who can cooperate

Any research library and, in justified cases, any non-research library with special collections may become NUKAT member if it has appropriate technical capabilities and accepts current shared cataloging rules and procedures.

Cooperation - brief description

The content of NUKAT database is built by catalogers from NUKAT member libraries. If a requested description is present in NUKAT database, the cataloger downloads it together with all related authority records to the local catalog. If a requested description has not been added to NUKAT database yet, the cataloger builds it and after it is admitted to NUKAT database, it may be downloaded to the local catalog. Such a description is available for further unlimited downloads according to libraries' needs. The cataloger marks the location of the document by adding the symbol of the library to the original description in NUKAT database. All catalogers doing shared cataloging in NUKAT are permitted to correct and enhance records in the union database.
All other users who find mistakes or omissions in NUKAT records are welcome to report them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Types of cooperation

Depending on the level of permissions acquired the library may do shared cataloging in NUKAT in a passive or active mode.

Data downloading - passive cooperation

First step of shared cataloging in NUKAT is so-called passive cooperation when the library only downloads data. The cataloger downloads a selected bibliographic record to the local database and adds the library symbol to the original description in NUKAT database. The symbol is displayed to the end-users as the name of the library hyperlinked to the copy of the given description in the local catalog. As a result the end-users are provided with information which libraries hold a selected document and what is its current circulation state.
Passive cooperation involves authority records downloading. Passive cooperation is free of charge.

1. The library interested in joining shared cataloging in passive mode sends Training order form 1 to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

2. NUKAT Center analyzes the form and specifies the details of the training for the IT staff and catalogers from the new library. The training is run as a free of charge webinar.

3. NUKAT Center prepares "Agreement on data downloading from NUKAT National Universal Union Catalog" (see sample agreement - pdf, 177 KB)

4. After the training is finished and the agreement is signed by the library management the catalogers from the library are given permissions to download data from NUKAT database.

5. If the library does not conform to the agreement, the cooperation may be cancelled and the library symbols may be deleted from NUKAT bibliographic records.

Data downloading and uploading - active cooperation

Full shared cataloging in NUKAT database - the cataloger both downloads and uploads data. Bibliographic and authority records are uploaded in MARC21 format with software provided free of charge by NUKAT Center. Active cooperation is free of charge, too.

1. Active shared cataloging in NUKAT must be preceded with passive mode of cataloging.

2. If the library is ready to upload data into NUKAT database, it sends Training order form 2 to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

3. The training which expands catalogers' permissions take place twice in a year. They are free of charge.

4. After the training is finished and "Agreement on full shared cataloging in NUKAT National Universal Union Catalog" (see sample agreement - pdf, 671 KB)

is signed, the catalogers from the library are given permissions to upload and download data from NUKAT database.

5. If the library does not conform to the agreement, the cooperation may be cancelled and the library symbols may be deleted from NUKAT bibliographic records.
